The Journey from White to Black

The belt system in ITF Taekwondo is a structured progression that takes students from complete beginner to advanced practitioner. Each belt colour represents a stage of development, both in technical ability and personal growth.

Belt Colours and Their Meaning

• White Belt - The beginning. A blank canvas ready to absorb new knowledge.
• Yellow Belt - The seed has been planted. Foundational techniques are taking root.
• Green Belt - Growth. Skills are developing and students begin to show greater control.
• Blue Belt - The sky. Students reach toward higher levels of understanding and technique.
• Red Belt - Danger. Technique is powerful and students must exercise increased control and responsibility.
• Black Belt - Mastery of the fundamentals. Not the end, but the beginning of a deeper journey.

How Gradings Work

At DOS Taekwondo, gradings are held every 3 months at all locations. Students are assessed on their patterns, sparring, technique, and knowledge of the art. Your instructor will confirm when you are ready to grade, so there is no pressure to rush. Gradings are open for family and friends to attend and support.

How Long Does It Take

The journey from White Belt to Black Belt typically takes 3 to 5 years of consistent training. Every student progresses at their own pace. The belt system is designed to reward dedication and effort, not just natural ability.
