Injuries in Illawong Taekwondo

Taekwondo is known for its art of kicking. It consists of quick and powerful kicks and strikes. One of the most common injuries that are present in martial arts is a torn ACL.  With the different kicking moves, especially in taekwondo, improper execution can cause a tear in the Anterior Cruciate Ligament. It is very important to take injuries very seriously. When an athlete has been injured, it is best to take a break from training because they have an increased risk of having the same injury again. It is also possible that when the injury is terrible, you would have to stop learning martial arts.

A torn ACL usually occurs in sparring sessions.  When a person gets too excited, the tendency is that the practitioner loses control of the kick.  Another cause may be to the impact of a landing kick.  It is always important to remember that kicking the air is different than kicking a person or an object.  When an object is a target for the move, be ready for the impact and try not to lose control and balance when executing.

To protect the ACL from injuries, you will have to perform the moves properly. Technique is everything when it comes to martial arts and it is not only for the reason of looking good, but it is also for the effectiveness of the move and to protect the body from injuries.

Illawong Taekwondo — how to avoid injuring yourself

Taekwondo is a martial art that is full of kicks as part of its style.  To make sure that you don’t go injuring yourself, you should follow a proper technique.  At first, always remember to stay calm and control your kicks. Whether you are training on your own or under pressure in a sparring competition, never lose control and start throwing kicks without thinking.

Another thing is that positioning of the feet is important.  Since kicking will make your body weight move forward, your center of gravity shifts.  To be able to keep balance while performing a move, make sure that the base foot turns outwards while the kicking foot is in the air.  This helps keep the whole body balanced while striking which makes it a lot stronger, controlled, and keeps you safe from injuries.
